Intrusive Blasphemous Rumination, Thanatophobia, and Somatized Panic

 Question:

In the sixth grade, while sitting alone at my school desk with my mind focused on my studies, I abruptly perceived an internal voice warning: "You will die tomorrow." Immediately, a prickling paresthesia flushed across my cheeks, accompanied by profound agitation. My family assumed I had suffered a cardiac arrest and rushed me to the hospital. During this period, when my female tutor arrived to instruct me in the Quran, a sensation of physical strangulation seized my throat, followed by a torrent of repulsive, blasphemous intrusions flooding my thoughts.

Whenever the call to prayer (Adhān) sounded, an overwhelming urge compelled me to plug my ears; the moment I took the Holy Quran into my hands, vile blasphemous thoughts assaulted my consciousness. To this day, I remain incapable of reciting the Quran. On one occasion, I attempted to offer prayers; upon completing four units (rak‘ahs), a sensation gripped me as though an invisible presence had pinned my limbs rigidly. I have never prayed since.

When I sleep at night, abrupt terrors jolt me awake minute by minute. These severe episodes recur once or twice each month, occasionally manifesting as catatonic rigidity where I struggle to lift my feet but cannot move them. Physicians dismiss this as baseless hypochondria (wahm), yet it is no mere illusion—this torment afflicts me daily. One evening, as I stepped into the bath, my legs began trembling violently; since then, I cannot even bathe properly. Daily, I despair: "I will perish tomorrow; I will perish the day after." Six years have elapsed in this state—neither living nor dying—though my heart yearns to establish the five daily prayers.

Answer:

To find permanent deliverance from this distressing state, have a loose, floor-length tunic tailored from unbleached homespun cotton (khaddar) or unwashed calico (laṭṭhā). Ensure the garment is tailored generously—measuring one handspan (bālisht) broader across the chest and sleeves, and descending fully to the ankles.

Enter a completely dark room (if darkness is not present, darken the chamber completely), don this garment, and pace slowly for fifteen minutes while reciting continuously:

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-‘ālamīn, Ar-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm, Māliki yawmiddīn

(اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ، الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ، مَالِكِ یَوْمِ الدِّیْنِ)

After fifteen minutes, remove and fold the tunic within the dark room and store it safely in that room. Continue this daily exercise until this mental torment is completely eradicated; absolute darkness is an indispensable prerequisite.
