Question:
For some years, my mental state has grown peculiar. It feels as though thoughts are launching an assault upon me. My mind drifts helplessly amid turbulent waves of thought. This sudden calamity has paralyzed my willpower, judgment, and capabilities. Regardless of where I am or its significance, I remain besieged by thoughts. Through these mental intrusions, such vile, sacrilegious notions arise regarding holy personages and sacred matters that I feel an urge to set my own heart ablaze. I have tried relentlessly; I wished to erect a dam against this torrent of thoughts through sheer willpower, yet I found no success. Otherwise, I am a completely normal individual and my physical health is sound. Yet, rendered powerless and desperate by these thoughts, I turn to you for guidance.
Answer:
Have a postcard-sized photographic negative made of your entire full-length figure. Instruct the photographer strictly not to place any markings or retouching pigments on this negative. Have this negative framed like a portrait, hang it upon a wall, and gaze at it from a distance of four feet for intermittent intervals totaling two hours daily. You will be emancipated from these intrusive thoughts.
During this regimen, if an adverse or contrary thought arises while walking, standing, or sitting, do not resist it in the least. If it comes, let it come; it will pass away on its own accord. The universal law states that whenever a thought is actively resisted, it takes deeper root. Whenever a thought of this nature arises, divert the focus of your mind toward an entirely different thought. For example, if the thought of fire occurs to you, do not struggle by thinking that fire ought not to enter your mind; instead of fighting it, begin contemplating a garden, a flowing river, or a verdant meadow. Through this mental redirection and contemplation of your photographic negative (Negative-theraphy), you will remain shielded against the assaults of inverted thoughts.
