Question: I have read in books of Sufism and spirituality
that whoever possesses the knowledge of the Ism-e-Azam can behold distant
realms and soar across space into the celestial spheres. My question is: What
is Ism-e-Azam, and how can it be known?
Answer: The Law of the Preserved Tablet
(Lauh-e-Mahfooz) reveals to us that from pre-eternity to post-eternity, only
the "Word" reigns supreme. The present, the future, and the entire
expanse stretching from the beginning of time to infinity are nothing other
than the "Word." All that exists in the universe is the
"Word" pronounced by Allah, and that Word is Allah Almighty's
"Name" (Ism). Through the diverse patterns of this Name, new
creations continually come into being. It is Allah Almighty's Word or Name
alone that governs the entire cosmos.
There
are numerous classes of Words; every class of Word or Name has a sovereign Name
that presides over and directs the Names within its respective domain. This
sovereign Name is likewise a Name of Allah Almighty, and it is known as the
Ism-e-Azam (The Supreme Name).
The
Names are essentially nothing other than lights. The Name that governs all
lights of a specific pattern is itself a composite of those very lights, and
these Names serve as the fundamental components in the creation of all entities
within the universe.
Each
species has its own distinct Ism-e-Azam: jinn, humankind, angels, minerals, and
plants all possess separate Supreme Names. A person of spiritual insight who
knows the Ism-e-Azam related to one or more species possesses complete
knowledge of the patterns, imperatives, and internal states of that species.
"Allah
is the Light of the heavens and the earth." It is this very Divine Light
that, emanating in the form of waves, generates life and all movements of
existence within plant life, minerals, animals, humans, jinn, and angels.
Throughout the entire cosmos, it is the grace of Divine Providence that every
single entity is bound to these waves of light.
Within
man, two perceptual senses operate: those of the day and those of the night.
When the states of these two senses are combined, their total reaches eleven
thousand, all of which remain under the governance of a single dominant Divine
Name. In other words, the Names of Allah operating within human life number
approximately eleven thousand. Of these eleven thousand Names, five thousand
five hundred function during the day, and five thousand five hundred function
during the night. Since man is the Noblest of All Creation (Ashraf
al-Makhluqat), every Name functioning within him serves as the Ism-e-Azam for
another species. These are the very eleven thousand Names. The knowledge of
these Names was taught by Allah Almighty to Adam, and those who carry out the
Divine Administration—the spiritual functionaries (Sahib-e-Khidmat)—are
bestowed with the knowledge of these Names in accordance with their spiritual
ranks.
