Recently, while reviewing the life accounts of
Ghawth al-A‘zam Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī (R.A) may Allah sanctify his
secret), I came across an extraordinary miracle. A man arrived in his presence
seeking a prayer for male offspring. The Shaykh prayed, yet the newborn
delivered was a female infant. The man wrapped the infant and returned to the
Shaykh, relating the outcome. The Shaykh instructed: "Keep the infant
swaddled in cloth, return home, and behold what manifests from behind the
unseen veil." When the man returned home and unwrapped the cloth, he
beheld a male child. Reading this, my mind turned toward the instances of
gender transmutation witnessed in the contemporary world. The distinction is
that modern medical transformations occur gradually, whereas in the miracle of
the Shaykh, it occurred instantaneously. Could you elucidate this miracle from
an esoteric standpoint to explain how such spiritual command (taṣarruf) is possible?
Answer:
In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty declares:
"And of all things We have created
pairs."
In the light of this divine verse, the metaphysical
equation emerges that every individual is composed of two primary layers: one
layer remains outwardly manifest, while the second remains recessive and
latent. Woman is composed of two polarities, and man is likewise constituted of
two polarities. In woman, the manifest polarity is that which presents itself
in feminine physiology and contours, while the interior polarity is veiled from
physical sight. Similarly, in man, the manifest polarity projects in masculine
contours, while the interior polarity remains unperceived. This means that the
complementary, opposite polarity—the feminine archetype—is interwoven within
the man, while the masculine archetype is embedded within the woman.
Occurrences of biological gender transformation
operate upon this exact principle. What happens is that the vibrational
impulses of the hidden inner polarity become so expansive and overwhelmingly
dominant that the operational impulses of the outward form dissolve. This
transition manifests when the inward feminine polarity inside a man overpowers
his masculine exterior, relegating the outer masculine form to subordination.
Consequently, an individual physically transforms from male to female, or vice
versa.
Spiritual masters endowed with cosmic insight are
fully cognizant of this natural law. The Shaykh al-Jīlānī, possessing direct
divine knowledge (‘Ilm al-Ladunnī) and understanding the governing laws
running through the fabric of the universe, exercised profound spiritual
command (taṣarruf). When he pronounced "It is a boy," he
willfully accelerated and actualized the hidden inner masculine polarity of the
infant, rendering it dominant over the outer form—whereby the female infant
instantaneously crystallized into a male child.
