Question:
Spiritual
science asserts that through meditation (Muraqaba), the constraints of
time and space are transcended—meaning a person can directly observe events of
both the past and the future. The question arises: that which has already
transpired has ceased to exist, and that which belongs to the future has not yet
occurred; how then can we perceive both the past and the future within the
present moment?
Answer:
Our
existence is founded upon "information" (impulses/data). We cannot
place any facet of life’s knowledge outside the domain of information. A
thought is the manifestation of information. Hunger, thirst, grief and sorrow,
the instinct for reproduction and preservation of the species, the pursuit of
livelihood—in short, no dimension of life can be detached from thought. We also
know that our volition and conscious control hold no power over thought.
Thoughts continually enter the mind without our intent or will, and the mind is
never, for a single moment, free from their grasp.
Thoughts
reach us by means of light. Thus, it must be acknowledged that light and
information are one and the same essence. Information enters the human mind
from various angles, and human perception labels it as past, present, and
future. Astronomers state that beyond our solar system, there is no stellar
system whose light reaches us in less than four years. They also point to stars
whose light takes ten million years to reach us. This implies that the star we
behold at this very second reflects a moment that existed ten million years
ago.
It
is worth contemplating that between these two moments—which are fundamentally
one and precisely the same—lies an interval of ten million years. Where did
these ten million years vanish? It becomes evident that these ten million years
exist merely because the mode of perception has fragmented a single instant
across ten million years.
Just
as the mode of perception can perceive the preceding ten million years
contained within the present instant, it stands verified that the entire
expanse from pre-eternity (Azal) to post-eternity (Abad) is
nothing other than a single instant. The mode of perception has divided this
single instant into the successive phases spanning from eternity past to
eternity future. It is this very division that is termed "Space" (Makan).
Thus,
the entire expanse from pre-eternity to post-eternity is Space, and all cosmic
occurrences that have ever unfolded remain bound within the division of that
single instant. It is the wondrous illusion of perception that has endowed a
solitary moment with the semblance of eternity.
Through
meditation, when the human mind enters that realm of perception which unveils
the continuum from pre-eternity to post-eternity, it gains the ability to
perceive both the past and the future contained entirely within the present
instant.
