Question:
I
have been married for nearly four years and am the mother of three children,
having lost both my parents. Following my marriage, verbal abuse was the only
language spoken in my in-laws' home. My husband possesses an explosive temper;
over minor matters, he habitually assaults me with whatever object comes to his
hand. Unable to withstand this hostility, my health deteriorated until chronic
illness became the bane of my existence. Since I became incapable of performing
domestic chores, my mother-in-law discarded me entirely. Physicians declare
that I suffer from no organic illness, yet taking even a few steps leaves me
breathless and fainting. Medical treatment brought no relief.
Since
July, I have been seized by the persistent sensation that my death is imminent.
Suddenly my breath suffocates and my heart sinks. Terrifying thoughts
ceaselessly torment my mind. I tremble before everyone and cannot attend to my
children. My husband cruelly wishes aloud: "Would that you would die so
that I might be rid of you!" When he utters this, blinding headaches
strike my brain; when he glares in fury, sharp spasms knot my abdomen. I can
neither eat nor drink. For the sake of God, bestow your guidance.
Answer:
Engage
continuously in the rhythmic invocation of Yā Ḥafīẓu (یَا حَفِیْظُ). Close your eyes and visualize that you
are serenely strolling through cosmic space. This mental exercise will
extricate you from the suffocating shell of despair. The root cause of all your
physical and mental distress is chronic trauma, deep deprivation, and
internalized hopelessness.
