Despondency, Existential Melancholia, and Purposive Living

Question:

My existence feels singularly devoid of joy, vitality, and purpose. A persistent sensation of having lost something haunts me, and an unshakeable gloom (qanūṭiyyat) hangs over my soul.

I strive to observe my daily prayers punctually and often succeed. My heart harbors no desire to complain against Allah Almighty; I remain deeply grateful for His bounties, recognizing my own insignificance before the ceaseless grace of the Merciful Creator. Both intellect and heart acknowledge this truth, yet for reasons I cannot fathom, an aura of mourning and sorrowful dejection perpetually envelops my entire being.

Observing my circumstances, I feel an urgent need to take constructive steps for myself and my future before I become a burden or an unwelcome presence to others. I wish to engage in meaningful activity and remain occupied so that I may secure financial independence and shield my thoughts from negative, idle whispers.

The struggle, however, is that I only hold a Bachelor of Arts degree and belong to a conservative social environment where women working in commercial offices is viewed unfavorably, even though employment opportunities are readily accessible to me. I cannot rebel against my family and environment, for I am acutely mindful of the familial bonds tied to me. I remain caught in an agonizing inner dilemma. Furthermore, I have reached an age where marriage should have taken place, yet I remain unwed.

Venerable mentor! To navigate life, an individual requires an anchor or a constructive pursuit to remain purposeful. Life demands a clear objective and a guiding ideal; otherwise, the peril of losing one's way looms large. I do not wish to lose my way; I yearn to lead an honorable, pure, and wholesome life, which means being at peace with myself.
