Question:
Only the bearer of a wound truly comprehends the depth
of pain; what can strangers discern of inward suffering? We have a brother who
is the sole breadwinner of our household. Corrupted by degenerate companions,
he has succumbed to the compulsive abuse of intoxicating pharmaceutical
tablets. Under the influence of these pills, his mental equilibrium shatters,
and he hurls foul verbal abuse over trivial matters. If we endeavor to counsel
him, he turns violently aggressive, physically assaulting us. Our domestic
environment lies in ruins. For the sake of God, instruct a remedy, lest we
collapse into madness.
Answer:
Genuine sacrifices offered out of love never dissipate
in vain. Offer a sacrifice born of heartfelt love for your brother: when he has
fallen into deep nocturnal slumber, sit upon your prayer rug in another room,
veranda, or courtyard in a state of ritual purity (wuḍū’).
Preceded and concluded by eleven recitations of Durood
Sharif, recite 300 times daily:
Wa-ammās-sā’ila falā tanhar (Surah Ad-Duha,
93:10)
وَأَمَّا السَّائِلَ
فَلَا تَنْهَرْ
Close your eyes, visualize your brother’s countenance,
and in the quiet of imagination, blow gently across his forehead three times.
The prescribed duration of this spiritual discipline is a minimum of forty days
and a maximum of ninety days.
Question:
Contemplating the historic Ascension (Mi‘rāj)
of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it becomes manifest that
he entered experiential communion with the realm of the Unseen (Ghayb).
It was precisely within that transcendent realm that Allah Almighty ordained
ritual prayer (Ṣalāh) for the prophetic
community. The Holy Prophet pronounced: "Prayer is the Ascension of the
Believer."
Reflecting upon this tradition indicates that ritual
prayer elevates the believer into the Unseen. Can an ordinary Muslim attain the
honor of spiritual ascension through ritual prayer? Furthermore, what precise
distinction separates the spiritual ascension of an ordinary believer from the
supreme Ascension of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?
Answer:
The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
declared: "Prayer is the Ascension of the Believers."
Contemplating the inner reality of Ascension reveals that it is synonymous with
the unveiling of the transcendent realm of the Unseen. Reading the sacred
accounts of the Prophetic Ascension, we gain conscious realization of the
reality animating the Unseen worlds.
Transcending earthly measures and physical limitations
of space and time, the Holy Prophet journeyed bodily to the Al-Aqsa Mosque,
leading the assembled Prophets in congregational prayer. Thereafter, he
ascended through the celestial heavens—the first, second, third, fourth, fifth,
sixth, and seventh spheres—and paused upon the Divine Throne (‘Arsh). He
conversed with the exalted inhabitants of the heavens, beheld the realities of
Paradise and Hell, addressed the angelic hosts, and attained a station of
supreme intimacy where the proximity between the Divine Presence and the
Prophet was as that of two drawn bows or even closer. Allah Almighty disclosed
unmediated secrets unto His chosen servant, affirming: "The heart
belied not that which he saw." From this sublime event, we derive the
definitive proof that Ascension signifies direct experiential acquaintance with
the Unseen. This constitutes the unique, peerless Ascension of the Holy Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him).
The Holy Prophet designated ritual prayer as the
personal ascension for his community. When an authentic believer establishes
prayer, a cognitive window opens within the cerebral faculties, enabling
consciousness to step into the realm of the Unseen and perceive its realities.
The soul observes angelic operations, becomes enveloped within a matrix of
celestial light, and—liberated from the shackles of space-time—ascends toward
the celestial heights, bowing in prostration before Allah Almighty upon the Exalted
Throne. Upon the believer who realizes this spiritual elevation in prayer, the
divine attributes descend as an illuminating rain of light.
It is essential to understand that for a follower of
the Prophet, ascension occurs spiritually up to the contemplation of the Divine
Attributes. Through prayer, an attuned believer may commune with angelic
realities, traverse spiritual paradises, and attain profound experiential
gnosis (ma‘rifah) of Allah Almighty. Such a believer is graced to
perceive the realities of the Throne and Footstool, while the inner ear
perceives the divine voice and the heart awakens to unmediated proximity.
The Ascension of the Holy Prophet, however, was both
bodily and spiritual—an incomparable station reserved exclusively for his
person. Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) attained access up to the Inhabited
House (Bayt al-Ma‘mūr); beyond that station lie the Veil of Grandeur,
the Veil of Majesty, and the Veil of Praise, culminating in the Station of
Praise (Maqām Maḥmūd). This was that
supreme apex where the Holy Prophet communed directly with Allah Almighty, as
revealed: "Then He revealed unto His servant that which He revealed;
the heart belied not that which he saw" (Surah An-Najm).
To comprehend the reality of prayer, acquiring
experiential knowledge of one's own soul is indispensable. The Prophet stated: "There
is no prayer without presence of the heart." Unless prayer is imbued
with complete heart-presence, delivering the consciousness from intrusive
distractions and fragmented thoughts, it remains an outward physical exercise
devoid of spiritual reality.
When a servant establishes prayer from the depths of
the soul, the restrictive grip of the rebellious ego-mind breaks. As the
dominance of the lower mind recedes, the transcendent Edenic consciousness
takes ascendancy—a consciousness sovereign over spatial and temporal
confinement. Approaching Allah Almighty with an intellect liberated from
space-time, celestial illuminations descend, conscious ties with illusory
material constructs (Fiction) dissolve, and the servant is absorbed into
the radiant emanations and divine presence of Allah.
