Question:
For a long time, I have been embroiled in internal mental turmoil, leaving me feeling nervous and depleted. A war rages within my mind—a conflict between moral, religious, and spiritual values on one side, and demonic forces on the other. All the satanic impulses of the world seem intent on conforming me to their nature. One voice tells me that truthfulness is virtuous, while another urges me to lie. This inner force seeks to strip away every shred of sanctity from within me. I seek refuge in Allah, yet I feel it is in vain; when I perform acts of worship, my inner restlessness only escalates. A negative tendency dominates my disposition—for instance, instead of visualizing light or radiance, the word "darkness" slips from my tongue. It is my earnest desire that everything other than Allah be expelled from my heart and that satanic forces cease obstructing my path.
Answer:
A mortal remains human only so long as satanic forces operate within him. Were the satanic influence to be entirely removed from him, he would no longer remain human; he would become an angel. The noble dignity of man lies precisely in waging battle against satanic forces, rejecting them, and advancing step by step along the path of the All-Merciful (Ar-Rahman) despite all impediments. Why satanic whisperings occur or whether they ought to occur is not your concern; your sole duty is to remain steadfast on the path of Allah.
My dear friend, consider this: if there is filth along a pathway, we do not abandon our journey because of it; we simply overlook the filth and foul odor, and walk past it. If satanic whisperings arise, let them come—they will pass on their own accord. Do not exhaust yourself resisting them. Keep reciting Yā Ḥayyu Yā Qayyūm (یا حی یا قیوم) at all times. Sit in the company of righteous individuals, listen attentively to their counsel, and put it into practice to the best of your ability. Be the first to greet others with peace (Salam). May Allah Almighty be your Helper and Protector.
