Spiritual Healing
Question:
Allah Almighty declares in the Holy Quran that when He
announced unto the angels, "Verily, I am about to place a vicegerent
upon the earth," the angels submitted, "Wilt Thou place
therein one who will work corruption and shed blood, while we hymn Thy praise
and sanctify Thee?" Allah replied, "Verily, I know that which
ye know not." Thereupon, He taught Adam the Knowledge of the Names (‘Ilm
al-Asmā’) and commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam (peace be upon
him). My inquiry is: what precisely is this "Knowledge of the Names"
that elevated the status of Adam (peace be upon him) far above that of the
angelic host?
Answer:
When we analyze the operational mechanics of
biological existence, a singular truth becomes manifest: an internal
biocomputer is installed within the human entity, continually providing the
operational data and notifications that govern living functions.
At times, it transmits an informational impulse that
plunges an individual into sorrow; at other times, it relays an impulse that
fills him with joy. It transmits the biological notification of hunger,
prompting the individual to seek nourishment; it alerts him to thirst,
prompting him to drink water. At other intervals, this internal computer
signals that the neuromuscular system has exhausted its functional capacity and
demands sleep. Subsequently, it transmits the notification that lingering upon
the bed without re-entering waking consciousness will induce nervous lethargy,
and accepting this data, the individual awakens.
In brief, unless this centralized cerebral computer
transmits an operational impulse, no human—nor any living entity—can execute a
solitary action. The scope of existence encompasses human beings, sheep,
cattle, terrestrial beasts, birds, predators, vegetation, and mineral matter
alike. Within every single constituent of creation, this data-generating
apparatus is embedded, consistently providing the precise signals required for
existence.
This biocomputer is nothing other than the human Soul
(Rūḥ). Across all
existent entities—whether animate or inanimate—an identical informational
architecture is installed; that is, the primary wellspring of life data is one
and the same. Yet, no order of creation possesses conscious comprehension of
the inner science governing this computer. Allah Almighty exclusively endowed
humanity with the conscious understanding of this biocomputer—which is the
Science of the Soul.
This is the very knowledge expounded within the
primordial discourse of Adam and the angels. Allah Almighty declared: "I
am about to place a vicegerent upon the earth." The angels objected: "Will
You place therein one who will spread corruption while we are sufficient for
Your praise and glorification?" Allah said: "I know that which
you know not." To illuminate this reality unto the angels, Allah
taught Adam the Knowledge of the Names, commanding Adam: "Declare unto
them their names." And He challenged the angels: "Tell Me the
names of these, if you are truthful." The angels submitted: "Glory
be to Thee! We have no knowledge save that which Thou hast taught us."
The progeny of Adam constitutes humanity, and the
progeny of Adam, in its authentic status as Adam, is designed to experientially
witness the very transcendental realities through which Adam (peace be upon
him) traversed. If an offspring of Adam fails to perceive that primordial
station—beholding himself as the object of angelic veneration, witnessing the
dialogue between the Creator and the angels, perceiving the divine affirmation "We
have taught Adam the knowledge of Our attributes," and hearing the
angelic confession "We know only what You have imparted to us"—then
such an individual has not yet substantiated the true birthright of Adam’s
lineage. His stature falls short of that exalted Adam concerning whom Allah
pronounced: "He is My vicegerent and deputy."
The core summary of this discourse is this: if an
individual remains entirely unacquainted with the primordial vicegerency
conferred in pre-eternity (Azal), and fails to witness these inner
realities during earthly existence, he cannot be deemed the truly enlightened
progeny of Adam (peace be upon him). To designate someone the child of Adam
solely on the basis of physical anatomical form affords him no greater stature
than that of a wayward offspring. For if a servant possesses no conscious
realization of the Divine Names, he does not operate as Allah’s vicegerent.
Humanity holds supreme ontological distinction over all orders of creation
solely because humanity was endowed with the Knowledge of the Divine Names (Asmā’-e-Ilāhiyyah).
